Immigration lists have a James Lewis b.c. 1852, leaving from London and arriving Sydney 28 Feb 1874 on the City of Benares.

Is that him?

Added -original location stated as Deal - that's in Kent!

Online tree has him marrying an Elizabeth Shaw in 1897 and dying Butler, NZ, 28 March 1912. Is that him?

One tree has his father, Henry, as 1817-1892, Susanna as b. 1819.

Henry, b. Pwllheli and charged with housebreaking (acquitted) in 1842.

Not sure how accurate this tree is. I'll investigate.

Hi,
The only James Lewis I can find in the 1861 census that fits most of the information you have given is in Orford in Suffolk.
Household          Role        Sex   Age   Birthplace
Henry Lewis    Head    M    50    Sudbourne, Suffolk
Susan Lewis    Wife      F    48    Orford, Suffolk
Betsey Lewis    Daughter    F    13    Orford, Suffolk
Sarah Lewis    Daughter    F    10    Orford, Suffolk
James Lewis    Son      M    8    Orford, Suffolk
George Lewis    Son            M    6    Orford, Suffolk

You need to check in 1871 & 1881 census for James b. Orford, to see if he disappears, possibly to New Zealand in about 1876. This could eliminate this James. Bangor is a long way from Orford. At least 3 places called Bangor in UK: Bangor, Caernarvonshire (now Gwynedd); Bangor-on-Dee ( Bangor Is-coed), Flintshire (now Wrexham); Bangor, County Down, Northern Ireland.

The Henry that ties in with the tree was a widower in 1851  so can;t really be your James's father.

Added - Ray - lots of census info was missing in 1861 so not a reliable census to look for unknown people.
