Simon Jones b abt 1795 Monmouthshire
« on: Thursday 01 February 18 13:00 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I'd really appreciate any help with a brick wall I've had trouble with for a long time now.
Simon Jones as born in Monmouthshire abt. 1795. He went to London at some point and in 1819 married Ann Palmer in the City of London. They moved to Bermondsey before 1823 and lived there until Simon died in 1855. He was buried in Hackney - but his residence is stated as White's Grounds in Bermondsey in the burial record, which I find curious.

I just can't find any clear record of his birth in Monmouthshire. I'd appreciate any ideas that might lead me to find his parents.

Thanks very much,

Lindsey

The actual burial record states his address as White's Grounds (Bermondsey) in 1855 - so why was he buried in Hackney (North of the River Thames) and not buried in Bermondsey - or at least South of the River Thames?

Apparently burial gounds/Cemeteries in London were getting full around the 1850's so probably the nearest available.  I have a similar situation with a relative buried in Hackney c1860

Apart from all the usual causes of death, the area around Bermondsey suffered more than most from cholera epidemics so you are probably right about that. I just assumed more burial grounds would have been set up a little further south, as from maps of the time it seemed less built up. I guess they just didn't have time.

Thanks for the link Rosie.

Given that the railway opened in 1854 taking the deceased and mourners to the cemetery in the south from London, it seems even more odd that Simon Jones was buried in Hackney!
