William GLAZEBROOK: Born c1844 Nottingham
« on: Thursday 01 February 18 14:55 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

This ex-convict's release documentation on 06/01/1862 states his destination is the Army.
I have trawled FindMyPast but the only William GLAZEBROOK from Nottingham that loosely fits the picture is quoted at:

WO97: Box 1862: Box Record 77 (Grenadier Guards)

It states in his army record that his service began 29/12/1857 BUT the first entry is 21/05/1862.  However, the date of birth 1837 is slightly different.   Is this entirely the wrong person, given the unusual name??

Any help, advice or guidance would be appreciated.

Thank you,

BAC3

The Grenadier's 20 year record starts on 29 Dec 1857 and the first entry is that same date.  The 21 May 1862 date which follows on the next line is him receiving one penny a day good conduct pay.  He also appears in the 1861 Worldwide Army Index so most unlikely to be the man released in 1862.

Thank you MaxD,

Sadly you confirmed my fears.

The strangest aspect is that although he is supposed to have joined the Army in 1862, for which I can find no record, equally there is no record of him living in civvy street after 1862 ??? ???

Perhaps saying he was going to join the army was a way of getting a few days knocked off his sentence  :)
