His WW2 records which would give details of his regiment & service will still be with the MOD

You don't need his Regiment but do need his DOB and if possible a number.

Just adding a caveat! ;D
No Death Certificate is needed if the person concerned died in Service.
(Presumably because MOD already have proof of death?)

I hope this does not come across as impertinent, but I would have thought that any medals which your grandfather would have been entitled to would have been automatically sent to him at the end of the war? I have the relevant document from the Under-Secretary of State for War which accompanied my own father's Defence and War Medal awards; these medals were automatically issued.

However, there was a campaign medal (GSM 18 SE Asia 1945-46) which was NOT issued to him automatically. I only found out about this potential award by chance in 2015. I contacted the Medal Office to confirm eligibility and was told yes, he had been entitled to claim it. So I did so on his behalf.

All I did was give the Medal Office as much military detail as I could, ie name, rank, serial number, regiment, etc. I also sent a photocopy of a page from his war record which detailed the dates and areas he was in from November 1945 to June 1946, just to hopefully speed things up a bit! It worked.
