If that is him in 1853 filing for citizenship, I wonder what went wrong making them return to the UK?

There is a 1855 census of New York, some parts are missing it's on family search but I haven't signed onto that site.
The name Crick/Cruik is not unusual in New York, though most came from Germany. If found in 1855 it would tell us a great deal as it lists everyone in the household ages, citizenship etc..

Thank you everyone for your replies, many years ago when I started my family research, I discovered that my G Grandfather left his wife and six children and went to New York, shame I discovered this after my father and Grandfather had died as no one ever knew where he had gone, he bigamously remarried there and I managed to find all this out, including USA census, copies of marriage certificate, death certificate, where he is buried, all this with the help of a web site very similar to this one, today I will look through my many files, papers etc to see if I can find this source again.

I did not realise that there was a USA section on here. How amazing that you found the application for USA citizenship Groom!

I have received much help over the years on here but my family history interest has waned these last few years, now I have decided to put my extensive research in order and as a consequence I have discovered many new things which have renewed my interest, so maybe you will see more posts from me on here.

I have just seen your reply Among, it was posted as I typed this, that is certainly worth a look.

I am so grateful for everyone’s help, thanks again.

We have a Family Search office where I live, I have just found this out, so intend  to make an appointment and spend a day there!

I am transcribing my family tree onto the Family Search web site. I like their layout better than Ancestry.
