My newly discovered cousin has shared this wonderful photo of our great grandmother Elizabeth Barlow nee Coxhead (1867-1938) – she is raising her glass.

I think the bottle label matches Simonds [of Reading] “Brown Ale 1 Oval 1932”.

Is Elizabeth’s hat just fashion, or workwear? Does that badge look like Simonds’ hop leaf logo?

Is she sat alongside a sister ?– possibilities are Louisa Ann Coxhead nee Coxhead [married a cousin] (1864-1942) or Mary Maria Reed nee Crook (1875-1933).
They all shared the same mother, but had different fathers.

Any thoughts from fresh eyes would be most welcome.

Many thanks Jim & japeflakes.

I thought the hat looked like a peaked cap, but with a full round brim, and a badge of some sort – so I just wondered.

Does early 1930s seem right? I suppose the label dating might not be spot on.

I would say they could be sisters, but which one?
There does appear to be a name under the logo on Elizabeth's hat, I can't make out the logo or the name, but it is not the brewery.
I thought I could see EXC..... but am not sure.

The hat is round with a brim all the way around it.

It looks like a brooch to me.

Thanks Pat, Lizzie and Carol
Think I now agree it's a normal hat - although a nice one - and a brooch.

Any disagreement with 1932?

I think 1930s is a good call.
