Mary MUSHENS had a child (James) on 31 July 1856 in the County Gaol, Durham. The birth cert shows the father as George MUSHENS, mariner.

I have been told that prison records for 1856 may not be available. I have no idea when or why Mary was imprisoned. Nor do I know when she was released, except it was before 1861 as she appears in the census.

In 1841 Mary was living in Robinson Lane, Sunderland and in 1861 at Catherine Street, Deptford. So I presume she may have been living in the Sunderland area when incarcerated.

I was wondering whether there may be any mention of Mary's trial in local newspapers somewhere between say October 1855 and July 1856.

Any assistance greatly appreciated.
