Kirkham area - "Threlfall" was ... where?
« on: Friday 02 February 18 17:57 GMT (UK) »
Having recently looked at some maps, and having heard for years that the surname "Threlfall" originated from a small settlement in the Kirkham area of Lancashire, - and that most of that surname can be traced back to there ..... where exactly on a modern map / map reference could I expect it to have been, please? Does anyone have any idea that is beyond the very vague?
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)

That suggests that Threlfall was in the area now called Whitechapel, north of Goosnargh. The Wikipedia entry for Whitechapel also references the name Threlfall, going back to the Domesday Book

Gadget's OS map ties in nicely with the location of the farm in 1086 ...

there were a goodly number of Threlfalls baptised going back to the earliest on-line records or 1680s in St Michaels Kirkham, the parish church for the area. They lived in several of the surrounding villages, Wrea Green, Clifton, Newton/Scales, Weeton, Westby, Treales

Goosnagh even with todays road is 20-30 minutes travel from Kirkham

True, however the British History article describes Goosnargh and environs as a detached parish of Kirkham, so there was a link between the two places.

That's rather what I mean ... I've got loads of early baptisms, etc, that are in locations scattered all over the area, and all seem to have taken place at St Michaels' church, Kirkham, yet reference books keep going on about Goosnargh - and as lancsann says, it's a fair hike between Kirkham and Goosnargh, despite the parish links. There's also the frequent reference to " (the) White Chapel"... that intrigued me.
Thank you especially to those of you posting links to maps, helpful confirmation of the small amount I had already.
I knew of the location of "Threlfall's farm", but hadn't thought it was the actual location of the area originally called "Threlfall" (or its many variants), for some reason.
Thank you all, BarbaraH, lancsann, Ramsin, Gadget, and Suzard, for your wonderful responses. This query may not entirely have been solved for me, but at least I'm certain now that I'm not missing something I should obviously have found quite easily!
