Surname MUDDITT/MUDDETT or MUTTITT
« on: Friday 02 February 18 23:25 GMT (UK) »
 ;D   This has me beat
I'm hoping someone is able to actually view a hand written entry and determine the correct spelling as I've seen it transcribed in IGI and family trees in different ways

Thomas and Elizabeth ;  of Halesworth Suffolk
daughter Martha chris 24 May 1819 Halesworth
Affiliate Publication Number:   RG4_1842

Married Benjamin Woolner 1840 Beccles   (BMD has it transcribed as MUTTITT)

Unfortunately I have not found an entry that I can actually see through a viewfinder -

Most appreciative of help
Cheers

Don't think you'll find a 'correct' spelling as such - heaven knows what it sounded like with a strong Suffolk dialect and was written down as it sounded to the appropriate party at the time.

Martha baptised as Muttitt (have viewed original page on FindMyPast), her father married as Muttitt, and in 1841 census Thomas and wife Elizabeth listed as Muttitt.  1851 is Muddett, 1861 he's Mullett and died as Muddett.

Three of Martha's children show mmn as Muddett, the other has Muttock.

Thomas states he was born in Holton, Suffolk but there are no baptisms there under any of the spellings.  However, as Martha baptised in a non-conformist church it's possible that Thomas himself was baptised in a N/C church too, and although born in Holton, baptised in another church who's records not online.

In my view, the name was Muddett as that is the most common one used as far as I can see.

I've my family tree which includes the WOOLNER branch on geni.com
I have put both spellings for Thomas and for Martha Muttitt/Muddett   so that kinda makes sense

Best regards
