Stanley Gilbert Burgess was a steward in the Merchant Navy before WW1 but enlisted with the Royal Navy in Nov 1915 still as a steward. Please can anyone tell me which uniform he is wearing in the photo attached.

Thanks for that, I was only concerned because of the colour of the buttons. I assumed that they ought to be brass?

Good morning,

I agree with Frank, he is RN. He has the fouled anchor on his left arm showing he holds leading rate. This is above a single good conduct stripe.

So if he was a steward then he has risen to leading steward since joining. Don't recall how long he had to do for his good conduct stripe so will go and look it up.

Added; first stripe was after 3 years so if he enlisted in RN in 1915 then this photo is 1918 at the earliest. He earned an extra 1d (a day ?) for this.

Thanks so much for all the additional info, very helpful. I was just confused because of the colour of the buttons, assuming they would be brass. There was a date on the back of the photo 4 May 1917, so do you think that his previous job as steward in the Merchant Navy would have entitled him to a stripe earlier than usual?

I've attached a copy of his naval records and it would appear that for a considerable amount of time he served on HMS Rosemary which was attached at various times to shore bases Wallington, Gibraltar and Hecla. I did find he was actually on board when it was torpedoed and damaged by a U-boat in the North Sea. Are you able to tell me about the wording in the remarks column?
