Coal Charter Master - Donnington Wood
« on: Friday 05 August 05 14:14 BST (UK) »
An ancestor is described in the 1861 census as being a Coal Charter Master.

Can anyone enlighten me as to what that would have entailed?

I haven't yet visited the area, but is his residence in Donnington Wood significant, in terms of his trade?

Thank you.

Alan.

Hi - I also have an ancestor who was a charter master at Donnington wood

Miners in the area worked in gangs - I think about 6 men some with specific jobs - the charter master organised the gang and negotiated the rate of pay for the amount of coal they produced with the mine manager/owner
- so yes his residence is significant as it would be connected to the pit

What was your ancestors name?  mine were Watkiss and Haywood

Hi Debbie, Many thanks for the description, very helpful.

My ancestor is Thomas MANWARING, born Wrockwardine abt  1813.
Living in 1861 at 179 Donnington Wood (does this still exist?)
He had by then married Emma LEIGHTON, also born Wrockwardine abt 1809.

Regards,

Alan.

I've got a 1841 transcription of the Lilleshall Census which includes Donnington Wood.

Can I look anything up for either of you?

Hi Helen, many thanks for the offer.
I know little about my MANWARING & LEIGHTON roots in Shropshire.

Manwaring could be spelt Mainwaring, as apparently this was
commonly written by enumerators if the person wasn't sure.

Thomas Ma(i)nwaring born abt 1813 Wrockwardine, his wife
Emma Leighton born abt 1809 also Wrockwardine.
Marriage not until 1842, so any folks with these names around in 1841 showing on
your records would be helpful.

Regards,
Alan.

Hello Coltrane,

Both my gradfather Richard Poole and Great Grandfather Richard Poole were Charter Masters in Shropshire .

According  to  articles  I  have read   of  historical societies in  the BlackCountry ;
" The actual mining of the coal and ironstone was undertaken by Charter  Masters , specially qualified men with training and experienced  , often being the sons of charter masters . These were contracted with the landowners mining agents to supply the  labour , horses , tools , candles , and explosives and also light beer to be sent down in small kegs at midday . They were not responsible for the winding plants and the sinking of the shafts . They were paid tonnage rates , the rates being obtained by weighing machines on the railway and by gauging of the canal boats . "

I hope this has been of some help .

As  for me I have found a William Pooe Charter master at Dawley Bank 1851 , a Horace David Poole  Charter Master and General Manager of Baggeridge colliery 1926 to 1937 , son of my namesake David  Philip Poole , who  in 1901 was manager of an iron foundry living near Amblecote , Staffs .
Now I have to find their links to my family .

Regards ,
David .P. Poole .
