He was apparently a Military deserter in 1873 but I cant find anything else military related to him so not sure if he stayed long enough to have a record apart from what is on the 'Military deserters 1812-1927' list.

It looks like they caught up with him as there is an article in the Hampshire Advertiser 13 Oct 1875  - David Burden & Alfred Ligo, privates in the 1st Battalion Rifle Brigade, charged with stealing a cord jacket from Mr Mundy's shop on the high street, on Saturday evening, when they were seen to steal, and caught with it in their possession. Remanded till Friday.

Also a discharge record from the Rifle Brigade dated 10 Nov 1875 for 1964 Alfred Ligo - character said to be 'very bad'.  A David Barden was discharged the same day, also very bad character & presumably his partner in crime!

Just looking up David Barden, there was an article in the Hampshire Advertiser 5 Dec 1874 of a previous theft by him and two others "..... for the purpose of escaping from the army by a conviction for felony, a very common course of procedure in the army"

The records for both David Barden & Alfred Ligo state that the cause of discharge was a felony.

Hi
Thank you very much for this. I couldn't really find anything on Alfreds Military record apart from that Deserter record.
His discharge fits as he went back to Leicester and had a son Alfred in 1879.
