Consistorial decree of divorce
« on: Sunday 04 February 18 15:02 GMT (UK) »
I have found an NRS catalogue ref. to a Consistorial decree of divorce 1883, and would like to know what exactly one would expect to see on such a document.
Is it likely to provide any information other than stating that A is now divorced from B?

I am afraid no one can tell you exactly what you will get, which in my tiny mind is akin to asking what toy comes in inside a cracker jack box.

If this was my search I would email the NRS and ask if this is from the Scottish Law Reporter or is it the original file and if so how many pages and the cost.

The SLR is a summary of those cases brought before the courts and condensed (summarized) to a couple of paragraphs or possibly a page or two.

If it is not from the SLR and the cost is affordable then why not.  You could be pleasantly surprised or terribly disappointed.

Many of the SLR Volumes have found their way online for free.  Some, are even in the larger Libraries while Universities who offer a Law degree normally have a complete set.  If yours is out there then maybe you get a glimpse of the entire record contains.

Don

I have turned off all email notifications, thank you.

Thanks, Don.
Having not seen any documents of this type before, I thought perhaps they would follow a set formula. It sounds as if it will be a bit of a gamble, so I'll wait until I have other things to look up as well, to make a trip to NRS worthwhile.

Were they married after 1855 in Scotland? If so, there should be an RCE re the Divorce on the marriage entry, have you seen that?

Thanks, but unfortunately the marriage took place before 1855.

Always worth checking the newspapers to see if the divorce was reported.

Thank you, GR2. Yes, there are reports, but while I know the story, neither OPRs nor newspapers give enough information to positively identify the wife whose name is a common one in the area.  I'm grasping at straws, looking for some way to identify her.
