Wadia GABRIEL and 5 Generations - what date is this photo please?
« on: Monday 05 February 18 12:54 GMT (UK) »
This photo is said to show five generations in a direct female line.

Please could folk suggest a date when it was taken?

Any guesses for the age of the girl?

I might then be able to have a stab at a couple of identities.

many thanks

May I enquire as to their possible nationalities? That might help establish a date more accurately.
Thomas, Davies, Jones, Walters, Daniel in Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion. That should narrow it down a bit!
Vincent: Fressingfield, Suffolk, Stockton & Sunderland.
Murtha/Murtaugh: Dundalk & Sunderland
Ingram: Cairnie by Huntly, Scotland then Abergavenny, Monmouthshire.
Bardouleau: London - in memory of my stepmother Annie Rose née Bardouleau who put up with a lot from me.

diplodicus - I assume the three ladies in black are Syrian, but I don't know a thing about them.
The young girl, Lily Gabriel (pronounced "Djabrill"), was born in Withrington, Manchester. Her mother Wadia Gabriel nee Esper was born in Damascus, but became British when she married in 1890 ; her husband Joseph had became a naturalised citizen in 1889.

Gadget - on the nail as always!

Lily was born in 1892, so can we say 1896 or 1897 for the photo?
Her mother was born 1873, so aged 23 or 24 here?

I agree with Gadget's estimates late 1890s going by the big sleeves of the lady at the back.

Thank you Peter - that's very kind and much appreciated.

The photo I have is just over A4 size and seems to have lost definition, possibly due to being enlarged (?)

Not too technically minded, Steve, but possibly the original was quite faded with age and the enlarged one shows up the damage/fading more than the smaller original does. If not that I guess it must have been something in the way the enlarged version was made.
