Edwin Frederick Campbell Robertson
« on: Monday 05 February 18 18:43 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can help me find the date of death of Edwin please?

Born Apr-Jun 1858 in Plymton St Mary District, probably Harford.
Married Lydia Perriton (Loraine) 18 June 1882 in Plymouth Register Office.
Daughter Beatrice Jane Victoria Robertson born Jul-Sept 1882 - very close to the wedding!

He is possibly in the army at this point, service start year 1877, regiment 34th Bde, Regimental number 945.

I can find no reference in the 1881 census for him, or for the family in 1891
His wife died Apr-Jun 1900
His daughter is in the 1901 census as a servant, and in 1911 she is married (Landricombe) so there is no help there.

None of the freebmd.org deaths registered seem to match him, so any help finding his date of death would be much appreciated. Thanks.

That looks a possibility at least, thank you.
If they can mis-spell Lydia that badly, why not her surname too?  :)

Interestingly, it has Liddia as still married, rather than widowed.
So if this is his wife and child, Edwin is possibly still in the army at this point.

Addition to my first post.

I've been able to download the relevant Chelsea Pension file, and he was actually discharged in Nov 1877, cause for discharge was epilepsy. He was only in for 7 months, and they decided the epilepsy was a pre-existing condition, so no pension.

So, there's still the question of the 1881 census before his marriage and the 1891 census after the marriage. He obviously didn't die overseas in army service, so I'd better check again.

Edit: And there's an 1881 census entry for Edwin F C Robertson and wife Maria, but his birthplace is now supposed to be Scotland. Is it stretching it to have two Edwin F C Roberstson's in Plymouth, both painters? I'm guessing they are the same, but he's only 23 in 1881 and is due to get married again in 1882 to Lydia ... the plot thickens.

Edwin Frederic Campbell Robertson was baptised at St John's Ivybridge 23 May 1858 son of Edwin (schoolmaster) and Jane. Abode Ivybridge. This tallies with the 1861 census. His father was from Plymouth Charles. In 1871 he is in an industrial school in Exeter, birthplace shown as Harford.

Thank you for the baptism information, for some reason I still can't find it on Ancestry, even knowing about it!

I had the 1861 and 1871 census information already, but didn't realise Harford is only 2 miles north of Ivybridge, which explains the Plympton St Mary on the birth certificate.

Still can't find Edwin's death.

He was definitely born in 1858, but on his 1882 marriage certificate his age is 28, out by 4 years.
Even with those 2 possible ages, there's no match for his death close enough that I can find, without further information.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to proceed further?
