Hes listed on the memorial at Vis En Artois as he was one of the many soldiers with no known grave

You can download his memorial certificate from commonwealth war graves here https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/1740815/carr,-john/

There is a good chance this could be the birth record for John Carr 1878 St Clement Dundee might be worth while viewing going by the 1881 census that was the district they were in

1881 Census address 12,Nethergate St Clement Dundee
Alexander Carr age 40 born Errol Perthshire occupation brick layer
Betsy Carr age 33 born Dundee
Alexander Carr age 10
David Carr age 8
Jessie Carr age 7
John Carr age 4
Jane Ann Carr age 1

1891 census address 5,Blinshall Street St Mary Dundee
Alexander Carr age 50 bricklayer
