Hi All,

Thanks for all your help earlier, hope you can help again!

My G G Grandfather Alfred James Barber (agricultural labourer, later a Scale maker) was born roughly 1863-1945. He married Elizabeth Sarah Heath in 1886. His Father Peter Barber was a Mariner (according to Alfred's wedding certificate).

However, I have found a lot of conflicting information on both Alfred & Peter. There's information suggesting Alfred was either born in Deptford or Yarmouth, although later census records state he was born Deptford (maybe just chose to put Deptford?) The family moved from yarmouth to Deptford (I Think?) as his younger brother William was born Deptford 1866.

However, all records corroborating this states Alfred James' father as Robert Barber, Not peter. 1871 shows Robert Barber as a fireman aboard a steam ship, 1881 shows him as a Mariner. (which again in Alfred's wedding certificate says his father "Peter" was a mariner?)

I cant seem to find anything saying Peter is the father of Alfred James Barber, only on the wedding certificate.

Alfred's mother maybe Mary Ann Carson?

If anyone can help with the information on Alfred and Peter, as I may have the wires crossed, would be greatly appreciated!

I Have seen a lot of personal trees that state Robert Barber & Maria Corps are the parents of Alfred James. But I don't think so, as on Alfred's Marriage certificate His father is stated as "Peter" unless there is more to the story!

The Robert BARBER who is showing as the father of Alfred was born c1833.

Who were the witnesses when Alfred married Elizabeth?  His address?  Do you know that Alfred had a brother William or are you referring to the William, son of Robert?

There are no BARBER/CARSON births registered 1860-1880.  Where does this surname come from?

Sorry It was Cursons not carson.

There were census records showing a Robert, Mary Ann, Alfred born in Yarmouth and William born in Deptford. Again I'm unsure if this is the correct family. But I'm fairly sure there was a brother William :-\

Alfred James was living at 2 Stanton St Deptford before he was married, his witness was Sarah Ann Heath & Henry (unsure of surname)

I'm pretty sure I've seen the address 2 Stanton St somewhere recently..

It is easy enough to follow Robert BARBER's family through the census records.  He was living at 2 Staunton Street from1881 onwards.  If this is the address on Alfred's marriage cert then you have the correct family.  All of the children have CORP as their mother's maiden surname on their birth registrations.
