Margaret RONAYNE, Ellen RONAYNE, and Ann WOOBY charged with stealing a pair of boots, Sep 2, 1867, which they tried to pawn. Margaret pleaded guilty and the other two not guilty but they were found guilty - Margaret sentenced to 3 months, Ellen to 1 month and Wooby 2 months hard labour.

March 1890 - Account of the inquest for Martin WHEELAN (sic) who had been stabbed a couple of days previously and taken to hospital.  Ellen WHEELAN, (sic),  his wife, gives evidence - her stepfather Richard RONAYNE  was living with the couple.

As has been mentioned before, other accounts use the name WHEELER and state that Richard is Ellen's father

There are other accounts also, for example:

You have probably seen this one which includes an interview with Richard RONAYNE with information about his earlier life (scroll down past the inquest info)

In this account of Richard's trial for manslaughter, Ellen is reported to state that he is her step-father.

Richard found guilty of manslaughter, sentence: 6 months

Doesn't help much with Ellen, although there is no mention of any children being present at the time of the murder in these reports.

Thanks for all these replies,

So, does it appear that Ellen was the dau.of Margaret Laundrigan (Landrigan?)and not Richard Ronayne, or Margaret and Richard? Perhaps there's no proof either way?

I had seen some of the reports on Trove... as most of my people were UK based (Ronaynes innumerable) I haven't had experience with Aus. records. I first tracked Richard down through the Old Bailey online, but it doesn't seem as if I have found an ongoing Aussie connection.

I will look up all the references given, and thanks for all the research.

Looking at their conduct records, Margaret was in Glenorchy, near Hobart, and Richard was up north at Longford, so Richard was not the father of Ellen. I don't think there would be any reference to "step-daughter" if he was, either.

Margaret had a marriage permission to William Gould cancelled (being sentenced for absconding) at the time she would have been pregnant, so I'll see if there may be a connection.

William Gould was hired by James Beresford, O'Briens Bridge (aka Glenorchy), from 1851 and Margaret by James Beresford, Glenorchy from 1852 - so certainly possible that Gould was the father! Hard to prove though  :-\

"Convicts under sentence (including holding a ticket of leave) required permission to marry from the Convict Department authorities from at least 1829 until 1858.  In most cases it was the man who applied to marry the woman, but those applications listed in the CON 53 register held at the Archives Office of Tasmania are where the woman applied to marry the man."

Well done Matthew, great finds.  :) I spent some time searching for Ellen's birth for lasswade unsuccessfully on an earlier thread (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=784123.18), so am pleased to see your results.

Its amazing how much there is to be found with this one  :)
You have found a death for Henry Owen in 1901 - he is buried in the same plot as Martin and Margaret, so there's a chance that Ellen will be too

From "Notes from the Hobart Benevolent Society 1858 - 1914" Joyce Purtscher

"OWEN Ellen
15 Sep 1904 - 45yrs, a widow, of 251 Liverpool St has poisoned foot & needs operation
22 Sep 1904 - granted 2/6 towards rent"

Records indicate the the house number shifted to 251 from 253 Liverpool St (as shown in Henry's death notice) and by 1906 another family is living there.

I can't find any mention of Ellen after this
