de la Cour /Murphy 1804 - 1866
« on: Tuesday 06 February 18 05:35 GMT (UK) »
Greetings from New Zealand Everyone,
I have recently discovered from DNA testing that I am descended from Murphys from Ireland. I have also discovered that the earliest Murphy on my tree was originally known as Edmond (or Edmund) de la Cour and that his family were Huguenots who fled to Cork from France. Edmond (1804 - 1866) apparently changed his name to Murphy to help his family assimilate in Ireland. I have Edmond married to Jane de la Compt with a death date of 1866 but have not been able to verify this information. I understand that the family had strong Church of Ireland links.
Is there anyone reading this that is familiar with this family? I would love to know more about the Huguenot connection and the time when this family resided in Cork. (I have heard that there was a house sold in Cork under the name of de la Cour.)
(I believe I am descended from Edmond's son Michael Murphy (1833-1914) who was born in Dublin, married Alicia Dickson (1828 -1910) in Tasmania Australia, and emigrated to New Zealand where he died.
Thank you.
