The theories of Alexander Edward Fox in New Zealand
« on: Tuesday 06 February 18 07:03 GMT (UK) »
Hi there. I'm trying to build a timeline and trying to build up a timeline for my family. I'm having some doubts and confused over little bits that I've found and trying to rule out. I'll post the timeline first.

4th April 1904
The earliest concrete thing I have about Alexander Edward Fox is that he married in St Paul’s Church, Christchurch, New Zealand, age 27 from Perth WA. He was salesman living 88 Salisbury Street Christchurch.

His wife Marie Elisabeth Schaner (Marie Elizabeth Schauer) was age 24 was born in Gippsland, Victoria, living 17 Etin Place, Christchurch.

The concrete facts.

1907 Son Leslie born in Christchurch
???Alexander sometime moves to Victoria Australia???
1909 Alexander lives Melbourne as a “traveller”
1910 Daughter Constance was born in Melbourne
1912 Son Leonard was born.
1914 The Foxes having moved and his occupation now ‘Manager’ in Malvern East, Victoria

Rudolph Schauer’s WW1 papers have his sister Mrs Fox as living in Malvern, Victoria. Then crossed out and updated it with % N.Z Farmers (gpo?) Ashburton. Rudolph’s brother Carl was his employer before he joined the army. Living with him at his place Clyde Quay Hotel, Wellington.

------------------------------------------------
This next part is a little sketchy.
What’s confusing is why on the WW1 1916, Alexander appears as a Publican & living in Ashburton. I thought that might have meant he might have tried his hand in bar work and that he was the A E Fox with the licence to the Pioneer Hotel.

June-1915 Mr A E Fox joins the local telephone exchange No 59, Pioneer Hotel. Hokitika

December 1915 Alexander applies for a licence for the Pioneer Hotel, Hokitika. It’s granted the next month. It was a new building (By 1918 is has changed hands)
My trouble is Hokitika, New Zealand is on the other side of the Island?

Sometime 1916 - Appears on the NZ Army Roll - Publican. Care of NZ Co-Operatrive, Ashburton.

March 1916 (Only 2 months later) - Had advertisement in the Ashburton paper looking for a lost item. At Farmer’s Co.op

------------------------------------------------

Back to the Concrete facts.

1919 – Alexander Appears on Two addresses in two of the same year’s electoral rolls.
* - 110 Moore Street, Ashurton Canterbury, NZ
* - The British Hotel, Lyttleton, Canterbury, NZ

March 1919, Farmers Co-op Association of Canterbury was asked by A E Fox to auction off 110 Moore Street property. 6 Bedroom home

The 1919 Electoral Roll had several names living at ‘Webbs’ British Hotel on different pages. H Webb being the proprietor who had the licence between June 1919 and Sept 1922

1. Alexander Edward Fox
2. Marie Elizabeth fox
3. Annie Catherine Webb - Marie's sister
4. Harold William Webb - Proprietor
5. Annie Davey - Marie and Annie's Mother.

Alexander possibly had sold his house and had planned to stay a few weeks at Marie’s sisters place, who lived in her Husband’s British Hotel, taking care of their mother Annie Davey.

Aug 1919. Ashburton Guardian
“Mr A E Fox - of the Hardware department of the Ashburton Branch of N.Z Farmer’s Co-op., LTD  transfers to Blenheim. Co-Workers gave him and his wife a travelling rub and a Wedgewood cream and sugar service.

1924 Daughter Gwen is born in Christchurch

1925 Annie Davey, nee Schauer/Born Clark passes away in Christchurch.
Her funeral took place at 15 River Road, Avonside.

1926, An October paper mentions Marie Fox to visit Australia with her Daughter for a few week holiday. Passenger list on the Manuka to Melbourne 22/10/1962 has both on board. M E Fox and Gwen.
1928- Alexander is living at 15 River Road, Avon, Canterbury, NZ

The move to Australia

July 1928 Son Leslie Fox Takes the Ulimaroe to Sydney on his own. Salesman 21
November 9th 1928. Leonard Fox aged 17, takes the Maheno to Sydney.
November 12th 1928. An Auction is held at his house to sell all of his stuff (found in newspaper)

November 16th, 1928. Alexander, Marie and Gwen travel on the Ulimaroa. From Christchurch to Sydney
   Alex 52 Hardware Manager
   Mare 47 Domestic Duties.
   Child (Gwen) 4yr Old.
Unsure where their other daughter, Elsie Meryl Constance Fox went, but she appears in NSW few years later.

A possible, but confusing bit in the research is that there a couple another A E Fox living in New Zealand as well.
I find a few instances of a musical A E Fox, which is made confusing more that Alexander Edward Fox was himself a very musical man.

1901(papers please) 28th Feb, Sergeant-Trumpeter A. E Fox returning from Boar War
This is difficult to prove, since I can't find much on Foxes from the Boar War.
https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/HNS19010301.2.9.1?query=%22A%20E%20fox%22

1904 in June, “Oamaru Mail” A E Fox playing music at a church.
1914 “Oamaru Mail” has A E Fox ‘dealer’ selling a pony harness regarding the North Otago Farmers Co-Op Association.

1918, A E Fox is representing a competition from (Tauranga), under the title Sgt.

1918 “Foxes Boot business” Te Puke – west of Tauranga, A E Fox business owner.
https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/TPT19181025.2.33.2?query=%22A%20E%20fox%22

1922. A E Fox mentioned as part of E Flat Bass Solo. was of (Westport Garrison)
https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/NZH19220217.2.105?query=%22A%20E%20fox%22

I'm thinking there might have been another A E Fox in the south that later moved to the north of the south Island.

Another hard one to swallow is that Alexander Edward Fox was a Publican in Ashburton 1916 the same year a A E Fox had a pub licence on the other side of the Island, and also in the same year appear to be advertising for a lost item in Ashburton only 2 months after renewing his licence. Being in Ashburton and associated with farmers matches his brother in law's description in his WW1 file. I'm trying to make sense if it's one person, or two.

Hi Seany,

A few more details re Pioneer Hotel.
11/6/1914  William Schoenmaker has the licence.
3/6/1915  William Warren to A. E. Fox application for transfer of licence - adjourned.
6/7/1915  Transfer adjourned until "very extensive repairs or new building".  Council forming a drain from outside the Pioneer to the river.
8/12/15   further adjourned till 20/1/16
20/1/16   application for renewal of licence but committee decided that a renewal of licence would not be granted unless a new building was erected.
25/1/16  Mr Durragh has taken over the Pioneer and a new building replaces the old.
9/6/16  a new licence was granted to Mr Durragh.

8/2/18 Mr Durragh's house badly damaged by fire. He still has the licence for the Pioneer.

It seems that Fox was represented by the lawyer at each meeting of the Licensing Committee. I could find no evidence that Fox was even in  Hokitika during that period.

I should be in that town in the near future.  Will ask around for some history of the hotel.

Thanks MalNZ for looking into that. I always felt he would be there in person, which felt like a bit of a stretch. I leaves me to think that he was trying to enter the Pub business like his sister-in-law's husband, who he lived with for a brief period. I hope you're enjoying your travels!

Public Record office Victoria  www.prov.vic.gov.au has shipping records up to 1923 from New Zealand ( generally coded N) If you filter 1907 or 1908 there are some with surname FOX but often Mr and Mrs which isn't helpful.
In 1914 they are living at 59, The Avenue, Coburg before enrolling at the Malvern East address.
Again you could check Outwards Passengers Melb to NZ  for them. Often the electoral rolls weren't amended until a year or so after a person left an address.
Do you have any idea where AEF was born? I see Marie Elisabeth Schauer b Wonnanngatta which is way up in the East Gippsland forest!

Hi Stephanie,

Thanks for the recommendation. I'm still trying to find the boats that took them out to NZ. Though I'm not sure when they left, but I imagine between 1914-1915.

It's nice to know that Malvern address. I'm thinking that's the one that appeared on Marie Fox's brother's war papers.

I had another forum trying to trace Marie's family too. http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=787287.0

Alexander Fox ties into this family, so born in Perth. I linked Alexander to this family with his birthdate Marie left in his bible. The date matched the birthdate of Alxander Fox in WA belonging to this family, thanks to a wonderful lady's research from the WA state library. Perth, WA was also on Alexander and Maries marriage cert.
