Marriage Licence: Intermarry
« on: Tuesday 06 February 18 20:34 GMT (UK) »
hello

I'm just wondering if anyone can explain to me what the term "plans to intermarry" would mean in a marriage licence from the 1700s. Obviously my present mindset is thinking family marrying family, but I'm thinking back then it could mean something different!

Any help would be appreciated!

Emma

Welcome to Rootschat.

It can also mean marriage between people of different races, castes, or religions.

Hi Emma, and welcome to Rootschat! :)

I'd agree with Old Bristollian it was more than likely just the way of saying they panned to marry.
You could post an image of the licence on here if you like, and we can take a look and see what we think then.
There's a help page somewhere about posting images - I'll see if I can find it.

Thank You for the replies! (I managed to log into my old account finally after some years away!) I am the Lewin relative who posted thus query! I was thinking it would mean "plans to marry", and that fits quite well with the information I already have on the family! From the OED
Intermarry: 1. intr. To contract matrimony, to enter into marriage; to marry.
 a. Said of a couple; hence of one person (with another). Now only in legal phraseology, in which it is the ordinary word for the intransitive use.
