Stephens

New branch for me... :)

Recently discovered that my Cornish roots are entwined with Stephens.. of Crantock -  had a good look and it seems a beautiful place.

But now I know that my family have 'roots' there (albeit sandy :) )   I want to know as much as possible...

I have seen that there was an earlier Religion before reformation and have documented a fair bit about that.

But surely there was 'smuggling' ????!!!! anything interesting about the area would be great.

My search involves the Stephens family  as per attached :-

So would be fantastic if someone can help with old registers or some kind of verification please :)   as my little list shows I have lots of names and dates, and so if and when I have some docs to go with what I have, I shall feel a little more positive its all correct     ish :)

TIA

Xin

To start off with, try the opc database which allows you to search transcribed records. Only don't start with Crantock as Phillipa was born in Padstow.

http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/search-database/person-search/

1861 census Barry's Lane, Padstow RG9/1540 folio 42 pg 32
William Helyar widower ag lab
Fanny dau 14 housekeeper
Henry John son 7
Phillippa Jane dau 5
all born Padstow

Philippa baptised in Padstow 10 Sep 1856 dau of William & Maria. Birth registered dec qtr 1855 as Saint Columb Major mother's maiden name Tallack or march qtr 1855 no maiden name given.
Maria buried 2 June 1857 aged 41, possible baptism 23 march 1818 dau of Sampson & Mary.
The marriage, however, shows Maria Tallack marrying John Hellyar 23 July 1835 and 1841 census shows her with John, but 1851 Maria is a widow. John was buried 12 Dec 1850. Fanny was baptised to John & Maria 5 April 1847, birth registered june qtr 1847 mmn Tallack.
William Hellyar marriage june qtr 1853 Stoke Damerel 5b pg 592 with Maria Hellyar on the same page. They wouldn't have married in their home parish as marriage would not have been legal at that time as John appears to have been William's brother.

Yes  --- I have the info on John and William  --- way back in my archives...

They were brothers   and I have it that John fell off his horse and died, so William, took on the family and they had to move away to marry.  I have the cert for that.

Then poor William 's end was sad and lonely in a Lunatic Asylum  - I have the records and they are very depressing to read.. It seems FANNY (john and maria) took him in and found he was not the full shilling in his old age..  So off he was packed.. to die a sad and lonely death.. upsetting.. But maybe Fanny had her hands full with her own little business etc...

This post was really about my NEW discovery of the STEPHENS line...
And as per... I didnt explain myself properly .. forgive me.

But I do appreciate your search and confirmation of my previous finds.

 :-* :-* :-*

PS   brilliant link to OPC  hadn't got that  - thanks Xin
