The 1841 census shows them in Scott's Close, Dalkeith:

James Howatson, 25, labourer
Elizabeth Howatson, 25
Willimina (sic) Howatson, 1
Thomas Howatson, 20, plasterer journeyman

All are born in Midlothian

I suspect the Howatsons may have had some children who died young between censuses.
Thomas may well be a brother, so worth chasing up to see who his parents are.

The ages are, of course, rounded in 1841.

There is a soldier, Samuel Howitson, aged "30", at the Cambridge Barracks, Portsmouth, in 1841.He was born in Scotland and is probably the Samuel Howatson, born c. 1808, Midlothian, who appears in the Chelsea Pensioners' lists.

GR2, the Thomas you mention living with James and Elizabeth in 1841 looks promising.

There was a Thomas born/christened in Dalkeith in 1819 to Samuel Hoatson and Helen Watson.

I think there is a death/burial entry in Dalkeith in 1838 for Helen Watson.

Hi I have the census for james howatson 1841, Thomas could well be his brother have to chase that one up Samuel howatson who married Helen Watson was in the Dumphies Militia, the chelsea pensioner  could have been another son of Samuel and Helen , they were married in 1807
the mention of Helen watson death wouldnt be Samuels Helen,  she be buried under the name of Howatson not Watson, its a jigsaw isnt it   but i feel we are getting somewhere     wolly

Have you viewed the OPR death/burial entry from 15 March 1838 in Dalkeith?

It is indexed as Helen Howtson, aged 59. Other names Watson and Samwel Howtson
ref 683/120 171

This looks a likely entry for this Samuel, possible brother to James and Thomas?

From these details on discharge, born c. 1809 in Dalkeith.
