Olof Zellen - Varmland, Sweden
« on: Thursday 08 February 18 01:20 GMT (UK) »
Hi there,

I'm looking for more information about my 4 x great grandfather, Olof Zellen born 1802 in Varmland, Sweden. In some records, he also goes by the name af/von zellen.

He married Casja Maja Danielsdotter and emigrated to Michigan, America.

I would appreciate any information going back before their arrival in America - who his (or Maja's) family was, and where they came from?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Anna

Here is the family. You should be able to go as far back as the books allow. If you want help just ask and I'll help you out. I haven't been able to locate their emigrating papers yet.

Some more:

Olof and family in Household Examination 1855 in Edsvära Parish

It looks as though Olof, Cajsa and Oscar left for USA 12 Sept 1862 but 1864 is also recorded.
The Oscar from the 1870 Michigan Census is the Oscar Gottfried Archimedes b. 5 Jan 1848 in Edsvära Parish.

Also Olof was a sergeant in the "Fältjägare Regimente".

You can see three listings for him here:
http://www.ep.liu.se/databases/soldatregister/search.sv.aspx

If you copy "ZELLÉN" in the "soldiers name" you'll be able to see him. You can also order the files on him but sometimes there isn't much to be had.

Ian, thank you! Your links provide a great deal of information and an ability to look through the Swedish archives.

I didn't realise Olof was in the Fältjägare Regimente, and I wonder if this is where he studied medicine. I shall continue to look into it.

Also from reading more about the Fältjägare Regimente - it seems many of the people from the Varmland area were Forest Finns... looking back further through Olof's line, I see that part of the family had come from Savonia/Savolinna in Finland so it's possible some of his family were part of this group who migrated to Sweden.

Again, thanks so much for your help.

Anna

Cheers Anna
Just curious though how you know the family came from Finland.
