SS Virginian 1909

Hi everyone, my grandfather was one of Britain's thousands of youngsters from poorer families emigrated out to Canada in the early 20th Century. He travelled from England (Liverpool) on the SS
Virginian on the 2nd April 1909.


Does anyone know what this crossing was like? Weather conditions etc.
A tough ask I know....but no harm in asking. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Try looking at this.  I haven't read it but I wouldn't expect to see any mention of ships in it.

That's very helpful, thanks. I'd found a postcard online which suggested it was a rough crossing and your link confirms a deep and significant depression out in the northern Atlantic in the early days of April.
As the conditions for steerage passengers on the steamers was well-known to be challenging at the best of times, I can imagine that a significant storm would have caused a world of suffering. Poor people.
