Brick Wall! William Prosser b. 1830
« on: Thursday 08 February 18 11:09 GMT (UK) »

I would very much appreciate some new eyes on trying to get some more information on my GG Grandfather William Prosser. For several years, I have been trying to find some information on him, without success.

I have him in the 1871 UK census (aged 40) as a Lodger working as an ostler in Birmingham at the home of Eliza Merritt and her children. In fact young William Merritt (aged 3) was the son of William and Eliza and in 1876 they married.

Unfortunately, William Sr. died on 5th February 1879.

That is all the information I have on him - apart from the fact that his father is named as Thomas Prosser (deceased) on his marriage certificate.

If anyone could find him on other census returns or give advice on further steps, I would be very grateful!

Best regards,

Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply! Yes, it is possible....but how to link them up? That is my main problem. I will need some common points before I can say there is the probability of a link.

Man thanks.

What was Thomas' occupation on William's marriage certificate?  Was that mentioned or just that he was deceased?

Oh dear, that's a bit of a blow.  How about the witnesses?  I guess none of them are related to William then.

Where is William supposed to have been born?

It says that he is born in Birmingham. However whether that is true or not...? There is a family tale that he came from Wales....

As for the witnesses at the wedding, I have a James Wilson and M A Mee or Lee (not too clear). I have not had much luck following that path I'm afraid.

I was looking at a possible father in 1851 census living in Birmingham - Thomas Prosser b1801 coachman, in Gloucester; Eliza Prosser b. 1801; Harriet b. 1834; Maria b. 1832. However, I may be clutching at straws here (perhaps the horse connection!)

It's a big disadvantage I don't even know the name of the mother for William!

Thank you for your help!

Was his death reported in the local newspaper? It may offer some clues.

His age at death is 48 ref BMD that matches the census of 1871
