How to look up family farm in Ballyhillogue in Griffith's Valuation...?
« on: Thursday 08 February 18 18:39 GMT (UK) »
First off, I want to thank everyone for the wealth of information you share on this website. I have used the information to look up my dad's side of the family - the O'Sullivan's.

I am looking up information on my great-grandfather Jeremiah O'Sullivan who lived in Ballyhillogue around 1866 - that is when he married my great-grandmother Mary Murphy.  In attempting to use Griffith's Valuation it asks the Barony, Union & Parish of the land - but I do not have any idea what that would be for Ballyhillogue at that time.

Any information would be appreciated!  Thanks!

Have you looked them up in parish Register?

That would be the Parish.
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

You don't need to enter all that information.
You can search just by name or using Griffith's Places just by townland.
The Parish is the Civil Parish.
If he had only just married he may not be the lease holder yet if they moved in with family, his or her father or mother's name might be on the lease, or even a grandparent.

I was going to say try the townland on this site
http://www.thecore.com/seanruad/
and it will give you the parish etc but there must be something wrong with the spelling as it is not coming up.

Thanks for your suggestions!  It seems that the spelling of the town is 'Ballyhilloge' for the search - and the parish is Grenagh.  So I have a Thomas Sullivan.  I guess that is as far back as I can go at this point.

Thanks for your help!
