Henry Manship Barsby...Illegitimate son?
« on: Thursday 08 February 18 21:47 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Ive been searching for my 4th grt grandfather Henry Barsby.
Through earlier help it seems Henry is illegitimate but I'm not sure if he is his mothers son by another man before she married or whether he was his parents son before parents married.

I have Henry's mother as Jessica Ann Barsby born abt 1820 Leicester, Leicestershire (I can find no baptism whatsoever for her)
She Marries a Henry Manship 4 March 1839 Leicester. Her father is given as John Barsby, A Bracemaker? and living at Kent Street.

at some point in 1838/1839 Jessica has a son born out of wedlock???

My 4th grt grandfather Henry William Barsby is living with Jessica and the Manship family in 1841/1851 listed as 'Henry Manship' parents Jessica and Henry, There is No baptism for Henry under the name Barsby or Manship.
From 1860 onwards Henry starts going by the name Henry William Barsby (His mothers maiden surname) although he is still using the Manship name as Criminal records give him as 'Henry Barsby alias Manship'

I'm wondering if Henry is Jessica and Henry Manships son before they married?
Henry was perhaps named after his father and has the middle name William which is Henry Manships fathers name.
But why would he change to Barsby and not keep Manship?
I have also been unable to find a Burial for Henry. He is last on the 1871 census living on North gate street/Court lane Leicester? His wife Elizabeth dies 1876 and is listed as Wife of Henry Barsby and that seems to be the last you hear of him.
There seems to be another Henry Manship roughly the same age as my Henry, But this Henry Manship was born 1835 Leicester to John and Ann

Henry's mother was probably the only person who knew who his father was likely to be.  If you get yourself on a DNA database you may be able to find if you can connect with the MANSHIP family.

I think there is a good chance that your Jessica may be a sister of, or related to, this Rowland BARSBY.

I also think that the surname was SHARP at some stage.  There is a news article about a Rowland Sharp BARSBY in relation to the payment of an affiliation order in 1846 (2 May 1846 - Leicester Chronicle - Leicester, Leicestershire).  There is no Rowland BARSBY on the 1841 census as far as I can see, but there is a Rowland SHARP with father John a bracemaker.

Jessica named two of her children Rowland and Oliver so there definitely seems to be a connection there.

Seems there's more to this parentage and Jessicas than I thought.
Interestingly I cannot see any baptisms for Rowland or Oliver under Barsby or Sharp. I wonder how that name comes into play, was the father John an illegitimate son of a Barsby/Sharp and is he switching surnames around or was that the name of Johns wife??

I have had my DNA done so I'll look into the Manship idea.

The maiden surname of John's wife Elizabeth was KELLETT.  She is too young to be the mother of the older children so probably a second marriage.  Oliver was born as William Oliver.

1851

Just as you wrote I was about to say about Louisa's MMN as Kellett.
I've found the marriage -
John Sharp - Elizabeth Kellett 1 May 1827 St Mary de Castro, Leicester.
Hmm John is listed as a Bachelor and not a Widow. Giving of course that his first wife I assume died. There is a John and Mary Sharp baptising in Leicester around 1814 I think.

Jessica Sharp's baptism fits with the dates Jessica Barsby gives as her birthdate. Given as she lists her father as John Barsby a Bracemaker and so is Rowland and like you say Jessica names 2 children after Rowland and Oliver, I'd say this is my Jessica although it begs the question...Where does the Barsby name come from, As Rowland uses the name Barsby aswell.
I can only think perhaps it was their mothers name?
Thank you very much for finding these, I would never of thought about another name being involved, I couldnt even really see any siblings of Jessica before.

Think I've cracked the Sharp name.
There is a marriage:
John Barsby marries Mary Sharp 16 Aug 1815 St Margarets, Leicester.
I've still to find a burial for Mary which warrants a re marriage or maybe they separated? But I wonder why John uses the name Sharp later on if his paternal name is Barsby and why baptise Children under wifes name????
