Help with town name
« on: Friday 09 February 18 01:58 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Can anyone decipher the town name in this image?
It says "Baker in ???" and is from a Dunfermline Baptism record in 1793.
Thanks.

Looks like 'Nether...' something. Nether - ton?
I see there's a 'Netherton' in Dunfermline.
Is the same place written on any other of the baptisms that might be easier to read?
Lane, Burgess: Cheshire. Finney, Rogers, Gilman:Derbys
Cochran, Nicol, Paton, Bruce:Scotland. Bertolle:London
Bainbridge, Christman, Jeffs: Staffs

Hi,
Thanks for that.
Yes, it certainly looks like Netherton.
The other 2 Baptism records just say Baker in Dunfermline.
Looks like there was an area in Dunfermline called Netherton.
I've also now found a reference to a Netherton about 1.5km NE of Milnathort (where this baker was born) plus another area named Netherton up near Glasgow (he was also named in some documents as a baker from Glasgow).
So, it's all pointing to Netherton (although which of the 3, mentioned above, is anyone's guess).
Thanks again, much appreciated.
Cheers,
Greg.
