Two Jane Payne's , convicts , Australia. Which one is mine ?
« on: Thursday 08 February 18 11:35 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for my greatgreat grandmother Jane Payne who married my gggrandfather John Young in 1846 in Maitland area, New South Wales.
Another Jane Payne married Thomas Oakley the same year in NSW.
There are two convict Jane Payne’s. One arrived 1835 on th “Mary” after receiving 7 year sentence for Larceny at the Old Bailey and the other arrived 1841 on “Garland Grove” after receiving 10 year sentence at Somerset Quarter Sessions. I am trying to find which one is my Jane!
This is my last brick wall and I keep coming back to it. She wants me to find her!

Jane Payne, Garland Grove, was sent to Tasmania and granted a conditional pardon in 1847

On the Claim a Convict site, one researcher has claimed Jane Payne of the Mary.   I believe you can (for free) subscribe to the site and contact the other researcher.

Jane shown as servant to Pieter Laurentz (Lieutenant) Campbell:

Another Jane Payne married Thomas Oakley the same year in NSW.

The two listings for this marriage show Roman Catholic Sydney and Yass

The marriage to John shows C of E Maitland or surrounds.

As mentioned by Matthew above, the 'Garland Grove' convict was recommended for Conditional Pardon in 1846 in Tasmania and this was approved in January 1847.
She would not therefore have been able to marry in NSW as early as 1846.

Just wondering Wilfiedog, why you believe your Jane PAYNE who married John YOUNG was a convict at all.
Is there something on a document you have which suggests it?
You have not mentioned this.

Do you have Jane YOUNG's death certificate?

 :) great question, Sue.

The NSW archives holds convict indents which show Jane per 1835 Mary was a married woman with 1 child. Likely these are digitised and available via commercial subscription sites.

October 1834 - vessel 'David Scott' a 19 year old lass named Jane Payne came free to NSW.   :)
