Andrew Galbraith
« on: Saturday 10 February 18 15:23 GMT (UK) »
I have the above on the 1851 Scotland census showing as born in 1829 in Ireland. His wife is shown as Sarah born in 1818 in Largs, Ayrshire but in the 1861 census she is shown as born in Ireland. They have a son James born in 1849 in Ireland although the 1861 census shows Scotland.
I have been unable to trace their travels to Scotland and, without a county I haven’t found James birth or Andrew and Sarah’s marriage. Can anyone help please?

You will have same problems with "Ireland"....
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

It's a start, perhaps. I peeked at Sarah GALBRAITH's death on SP. Father was Robert PORTER mother was Elizabeth nee ARMSTRONG.

Marriages on FMPast
1848 Downpatrick

Volume   4
Page   775
Andrew Galbraith married one of these people
Ann Jane McKee, Mary Hamilton Or Mcdowell, SARAH PORTER, Mary McDowell Hamilton, Mary Craig
County   Down
....

I think the PORTERs in Largs on the 1851 are related to Sarah.

Andrew Galbraith of Drumquoile (Drumanaquoile), Kilmegan, married Sarah Porter of Drumquoile (Drumanaquoile) on 15 December 1848 (civil registry), both were full age, Andrew was a labourer and his father, also a labourer, was given as James Galbraith, Sarah's father was given as Robert Porter, a farmer, Eliza McKeown and Eliza Burns were witnesses.

The local print date of Griffith's Valuation for Drumanaquoile in the parish of Kilmegan was 1863 and a Robert and James Porter were listed on consecutive lines:

Thanks for all the information. I believe their son James was born in 1848 before they left for Scotland. Would there be any records of their voyage or their arrival in the UK?

I'm afraid not, a multitude of folk sailed back and forth the short distance between Britain and Ireland day and daily, no records exist.

Porters in the area are shown in Ros Davies' Co. Down website (link to 'frozen' / archive version below, pending current website becoming available again), including this reference:

Robert PORTER | Kilmegan | will probated 1836; executor was R. Porter of Drumnaquoile

To expand on the above reply- Ireland was part of the U.K. so no records were kept of people travelling between Ireland and Scotland, England and Wales.
