Seeing for myself
« on: Saturday 10 February 18 22:48 GMT (UK) »
I've now managed to form a good idea of how my ancestors lived, and where they lived, at the end of the 19th Century. I have loads of addresses which beckon to me to do a bit of a "nostalgia walk" around the streets of Beswick/Ancoats M/c

It's a very long way to come. Which begs the question " is there much of the original vista to see"? Or has the area been altered drastically with modern housing developments. I'm assuming the latter is more likely?
Is there anyone local who can tell me. Thanks.

Haha...I never thought of that! THAT would save on airfare, wouldn't it!
Thanks for your input  :)

Just remember that some streets renumbered the houses as the areas expanded so when you look at an addresss from the census and then on google maps street view it might not be the same house. The house I was born in was number 26 but originally it was number 7 as a good example of this.

Also be aware that in some areas, the street might have been either renamed, or absorbed into another, or even been overrun by developments.

Yes, I was looking last night for a significant street, Russell St, (off Every St) which seems to no longer exist.

I hadn't considered the re-numbering aspect. Food for thought.

I have since come across this cool website www.flicks.com which might fill a few of the gaps for me.

To get an idea of the changes in an area, a good place to start is :

http://maps.nls.uk/geo/find/#zoom=5&lat=56.0000&lon=-4.0000&layers=102&b=1&point=0,0

Enter a place name, select 'side by side' view from the top panel, and select different maps from the selection on the left. Some show much more detail than others. You can zoom and scroll and if aligned correctly, use your cursor to trace where streets and houses used to be.

For example, this is a fairly detailed map:
http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=15.117745740587637&lat=53.4872&lon=-2.2307&layers=168&right=BingHyb

You will probably also find some town plans which show even more detail.

In general, the more urban areas have seen more changes, and in some cases entire streets and houses have been obliterated, but some villages remain virtually untouched.
