Army marriage 1840
« on: Sunday 11 February 18 15:41 GMT (UK) »
Hi
My gg grandparents - Samuel and Margaret Campbell - were married in 1840 in Mullingar, Westmeath, Ireland (got this information from their sons birth certificate)
Samuel served with the 91st Regiment of Foot (Highlanders)
As Samuel was in the army would they have been married on the army base or in a local church, would anyone know ?
Also their eldest daughter was born in Ireland before the family returned back to Scotland.
Thanks

It I were chasing the marriage, the first thing I'd look at would be the army/military indexes on FindMyPast.

https://search.findmypast.co.uk/search-world-records/british-armed-forces-and-overseas-banns-and-marriages  If it's there, it'll save hours of errfort

Interesting note in his pension records.....seems he lost his pension due to commuting a felony....but was then restored in 1850.
Do you have his service record?

Hi

PaulineJ

Thank you I had a a look on the link you sent but there was no record of their marriage.

gortonboy

Many Thanks for the info. Elizabeth was my g grandmother and I only knew she born in Ireland sometime after 1840 so that's brilliant that you found the birth.

Agnes was the second child also born whilst Samuel was in the army, he was discharged in 1847. The remaining 4 children were all born in Aberdeen
Yes I have his army record but there's quite a lot on it I don't understand but am working my way through it.  He originally joined up in 1826 with the 74th Regiment of Foot but transferred in 1834 to the 91st to serve with his elder brother - someone I've yet to find
I assume he was based in Ireland for a time a so that's way he was married there, as Margaret, his wife was born in Aberdeen

Thanks
Fiona
