Bolton Market used as a theatre
« on: Sunday 11 February 18 18:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi I have come across a newspaper article from 1876 which mentions a 'Theatre of Varieties' in the wholesale market in Bolton. Does anyone have any knowledge about this or can point me in the right direction to find out more - I can't see why a theatre  would be built in a market or am I reading too much into this? Was it using the market space as a performance area?

I do wonder if it was an open air theatre of sorts

D'Castro's Family,
male and female acrobats and gymnastics (5 in number)
including the pocket Grimaldi (me)
are appearing nightly with the greatest of success
at the Theatre of Varieties Bolton
first vacant date November
this act appeared all over the country in 1876

I looked at another advertisement, for another act in 1876 and it says at the Prince of Wales Theatre of Varieties Bolton
Gunning County Down,Kneale Isle of Man,Riddle Tynemouth,Bibby Kendal/Bradford,Colenso Penzance/Barrow-in-Furness,Steele Corney Fell,Chapman Ely,Dawes Alfreton,Blamire Westmoreland and Ulverston

There is a site on facebook  if you belong that is, called 'I Belong To Bolton' as an old Boltonian there is nothing these people don't know.

I left the town when I was 15 so of no use to you, give the site a go.
