Burrowes Familiy in Cork
« on: Sunday 11 February 18 21:25 GMT (UK) »
I am researching my Great Grandfather Samuel James Burrowes.
Samuel was born in 1857 and married Amelia Ryder (born in 1861/2) in about 1884. In 1891 when my grandfather was born, the Burrowes family lived at 78 Friars Walk, Cork. Later there would be three more children to make the total of seven siblings. I have been able to trace the Family’s move to Dublin and the subsequent death of Amelia in 1914, and Samuel in 1917 after the sinking of the SS Adela on which he was the Chief engineer.
What I have not been able to do is trace his family in Cork. I have a photo of Samuel with his 5 brothers and 2 sisters, but I do not know their names or anything about the family. Can anyone help with this ?

The marriage was in 1883, Samuel's father John (dead) was in the Constabulary:

Thanks for this information I can now work on the next generation back! I had caught up with the Census info, and been able to follow the family in the 1900s. Grandpa Burrowes (Alfred Edward) was one of the Pals who joined the7th Royal Dublin Fusiliers. He saw service in Gallipoli where he received a commission and later in France as a Captain in the 2nd battalion. When he was wounded in 1917 he joined the RFC and then became a n officer in the RAF.

Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

Hi. My great grandmother was Eliza (married to Richard Bird). They remained in Cork. Her younger son, William Burrowes Bird, was my grandfather. He took the Civil Service exams and moved to London, where he spent the rest of his life. I should be very interested in seeing the photo you have of Samuel and his siblings. I'm not sure if I have one of Eliza, but will let you know if I come across one. I am going to Cork soon to do more research.
