I am researching my Great Grandfather Samuel James Burrowes.
Samuel was born in 1857 and married Amelia Ryder (born in 1861/2) in about 1884. In 1891 when my grandfather was born, the Burrowes family lived at 78 Friars Walk, Cork. Later there would be three more children to make the total of seven siblings. I have been able to trace the Family’s move to Dublin and the subsequent death of Amelia in 1914, and Samuel in 1917 after the sinking of the SS Adela on which he was the Chief engineer.
What I have not been able to do is trace his family in Cork. I have a photo of Samuel with his 5 brothers and 2 sisters, but I do not know their names or anything about the family. Can anyone help with this ?
I wonder if we might be related? My Great Grandfather was Edward James Burrowes, who married Henrietta van Nostrand in New York City. His father I believe was also called Edward James Burrowes, or at least Edward Burrowes, and was from Ireland. I've been told this Edward Burrowes taught at Trinity College, though I can't be certain of this.
I don't have hard and fast dates for either Edward, but my grandmother Viola Isabel Burrowes (later Nield) was born November 20, 1911, in Brooklyn, NY. Perhaps if she could be traced back to her grandfather, and he could be traced back to Ireland we could see if our families coincide?
