Glasgow Cemetery Maps

Hello all,

I am hoping this is the correct place for this question.  I have recently been looking at graves and my question is really out of curiosity more than anything else.

I was curious if does anyone have cemetery maps down to where each lair is?  Is there even such a thing?  How do the cemetery groundskeepers figure it out?  My feeling is there must be something telling them the sequence at least.  I am just thinking if the map were to be shared most people could figure out where the graves are themselves.

The numbered lair maps are used by the cemetery staff who, as many graves lack a stone, would be lost without them, there will be copies with the City Council, probably in John Street?

If we all contribute what we have, I'm sure we can build up a good library of lair maps.  I have a scan of a good set of plans of Glasgow Southern Necropolis, dated 1895.   I'm unsure of copyright issues etc. so I'll wait for guidance from this group before posting.  The plan, I found "somewhere" on the Web, years ago.

I am particularly interested in lair maps as if helping people find graves it would be very handy to have, especially in sections where there are not so many stones.

Jonathan, not as straightforward as it would seem really 

I have recently obtained all the lairs by section maps for a small historical cemetery in London. If you were there, not many stones left in over half of the cemetery. Have a look at these section maps I got for the cemetery... www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=773992.0 I have always thought it looked and felt not too busy  Remembering also that there can be multiple burials in one lair. The one I was looking for had 7 people.

Numbering does not follow sequence and order. You do need to refer to the actual burial registers and individual plans to confirm locations and even then, in the absence of stones for many, it can take a lot of luck and figuring out locations within a cemetery.

Staff on site are obviously invaluable in these searches.
