Hi Cupcake,

You only have a four year window for Boer War. 1899-1902, so I doubt you will get much narrower date than that.    ;).

I suppose maybe a regiment could have been there for only part of the time, but I know some Aussies were there for much of the war . . . .  and there are a couple of Aussies in your photo.  There seem to be several different groups represented don't there?

Sorry can't help more.

Wiggy.     :)

Percy, Dunning, Hyne, Grigg, Farley (Devon, UK)
Duncan (Fife, Devon), Hugh, Blee (Cornwall)
Green, Mansfield, (Herts)

Having looked at the family for cupcake before, I believe it is a group of men including some from the Volunteer Service Company of the Kings Own Scottish Borderers with whom a George Moffat served in the Imperial Yeomanry.  The first of the VSC arrived in Jun 1900 so after that date.

PS - The slouch hats don't necessarily indicate Australians, the hat was worn by many of the Imperial forces.
I am Zoe Northeast, granddaughter of Maximilian Double.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

Hi Wiggy,

At least I have a 4 year window 1899-1902.

When I look at the photograph I can see a couple of Aussies and, thank you for pointing out that several different groups are represented in the photo.

Many thanks

Hi Max,

Thank you for the information. Have to say, I thought the slouch hats were perhaps Australian, too.

I was looking at photos of Breaker Morant and looking at the uniform in general!

I know that was a film, but it would have been historically correct as far as uniform goes I believe.  ;)

Casual looking crew aren't they!    ;D

I thought the same thing Wiggy.  Those slouch hats with the very wide band were typical of
those worn by Aussies in the Boer War.  My Granddad's photo shows a similar hat but he was
in the Lighthorse so his had a splendid feather decoration.  The rising sun badge was attached to
the side.
