I've learned something today about the wearing of slouch hats and always connected them to the Australian forces.

Serving in the Scottish Horse in the Boer war, VC in 1901.

Thought you'd enjoy an Irishman named English serving in a Scottish regiment winning a VC in South Africa.

I am Zoe Northeast, granddaughter of Maximilian Double.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

Interesting that the two in slouch hats wear their bandoliers (I think that's the name isn't it?) on the other shoulder to the one on the right hand end.     I wonder if there is any significance to that.  :-\

Maybe they're left handed?  Think you'd want the bandolier on the opposite shoulder to where the rifle butt ends up.  Most period photos seem to show it slung over the left shoulder.

Don't think it is to do with handedness    :-\
 - when in 'formation', they'd all wear them the same way surely?

So that would be the way you dressed in uniform - (well that's my guess anyway.  :))
