Address seemingly missing from 1851 Census
« on: Monday 12 February 18 12:55 GMT (UK) »
Many years ago I appealed for help with one of my families, and a kind Rootschatter sent me images of a family I couldn't find on either Ancestry or FindMyPast. I've tried again today to find them, but Ancestry have the record, but their link takes me to another image (a different address altogether - I have notified them but without much hope of a quick response) and FindMyPast don't turn anything up at all.
The address is Pope's Parade, The Weir, St Pauls parish Bristol for 1851. The family are the Mitchells:
Henry aged 33 french polisher
Hannah wife 32
Mary d 9
Henry s 7
Marandea d 1
and the reference is 1949 f149 p9

Any help finding images so I can search the surrounding streets would be appreciated

Try this link on F M P

I just put Popes Parade into 'street' on the 1851 search page (nothing else) - not many results but selected one and worked back from it - you have the page reference

Unfortunately for anyone with family in Bristol, Ancestry have made a complete mess of the 1851 census.  For much of St Paul they have images for every second page only and the links to the missing images end up on random pages.

I have gone back through my emails and see that I first told them about it on 25 Oct 2010.  Their first reponse gave me tips on how to search the census  ;D  It took five emails back and forth before someone actually read my first email and responded:

"Fixing errors on Ancestry is a long and involved process. We cannot just fix one error in the Record Database, instead we have to send the whole database to be re transcribed. As you can see this is a huge project that takes a lot of time and money to do. This is why we track these errors so that we can prioritize which databases we are fixing by the number of users effected and the order in which reported. Your patience and understanding in this matter are appreciated."

It has been 8 years so I wouldn't hold your breath.

Debra  :)

Thank you all so much - I knew there must be a way of seeing it on FindMyPast but forgot how to search an address only. I'm still surprised that they haven't transcribed it though - it looks clear enough to me.

Regarding Ancestry, I think I did point this out to them some time ago as well - they are being incorrect to describe this as if it were a transcription error though

Hi Steve

To search  by address or census ref. on FindMyPast, you can use the A-Z of records (UK) listing and then select the census year.

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01lk7/

I have some of them bookmarked so that I can go straight in.
