There is one Brian Radcliffe who was "At School" in Holmfirth in 1939 listed as age 27 born 1917.
Carol

I saw that one Carol, but I can't find a birth for him in 1917. It's also strange, as if he was born 1917, he'd be 22 in 1939, so why would he be "at school" I wonder? Why not University student or teacher if it is him?

It could be 21 but it looks like 27...I wondered if he was training to be a teacher?

If so, rather strange that they didn't put student rather than "at school"

It appears to be a fairly recent name. If you just put Brian Radcliffe into Freebmd the earliest I can see was born 1925.

I wonder if it is the Bryan that Ashdown found and he reverted to the spelling with an "i"? Although the surname is Ratcliffe not Radcliffe. How clear is the signature on the book?

Could the teacher's name be Bryan C Ratcliffe? He was born 1915, Barton, Lancashire.

He appears on the 1939 living at Worsley, Lancashire.
