Can anyone give me a map reference for this address?
« on: Monday 12 February 18 23:05 GMT (UK) »
Hello people,

One of my ancestors lived here in 1841.

Event Place:   Easton, Wiltshire, England
Residence Note:   Easton Street
Affiliate Record Type:   Household
County:   Wiltshire
Page Number:   5
Registration Number:   HO107
Piece/Folio:   1180/6

Familysearch link:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M73P-55T

Best search name, if you need one, is 'Charles Waddam' born 1829.

>>> I'd rather like to have a Google Map image of this place to see what kind of place my ancestors came from. Therefore any map reference, whether it be by distances to nearest towns or by lat and longitude, would be helpful.

Thanks
David C

This is Easton Lane heading into Easton:

Added: The 1841 census's enumerator's walk is not very helpful. It just says the "whole of the parish of Easton." You could have a look through the 12 pages to try to work out the route the enumerator took using farm names as a guide. Easton Street seems quite long so difficult to narrow down the precise abode of your ancestor.
You could also check the 1851 census for Easton Street in case the enumerator gives more details of the residences he visited.

I have to sign off now so can't continue the search.

Good luck.

Scroll down to paragraphs 9 to 12 for the location description,

http://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/wilts/vol16/pp140-149

Then the map, village now called Easton Royal.

The "Street" runs up the middle of the map.

Thank you, folks.

What I glean from the maps is that this whole area is peppered by tiny settlements maybe only a kilometre apart, and that leaving Easton for an adjacent community is hardly an epic migration.

The split maps are very good. Thank you.

The history file is huge for such a small community. My quick browse through it reveals that this is a community with a substantial number of poor people who needed handouts, and the richer families were willing and able to help them with annual donations of money, coal etc. This is a real community!

I Googled some of the streets and am impressed by the beauty of the old thatched homes in this place.

And yes I will look at the later censuses to get a better fix of where my Whitebread ancestors lived, and whether the property identified in 1841 was handed down through the generations.

>>>> Can I extend the search to include 'Great Bedwyn' ? This is where my ancestors married. It should be a short distance from Easton. I don't know if these maps will allow me to slide across to wherever that place is.

Cheers
-David C

Malky has identified the correct Easton, which the census specifies is in the district of Pewsey.

The one I gave the links to earlier is a different Easton.  :)
