Soldier 29th Regt
« on: Tuesday 13 February 18 00:51 GMT (UK) »
Hello
My gg grandfather was a soldier but the only clues I have are:

from his wedding certificate his occupation is “Soldier 29th Regt”
He was married in Glasgow in 1863 age 31
He was born in Ireland, possibly Dublin

I would like to find out more about his regiment, what was it’s name and possibly identify where he may have served.
Thank you

The 29th became the Worcester Regiment. (see Wikipedia entry for background information ).
I can't help with the Regiment's postings but there are others on here who will no doubt be able to help.

Maec
Baron (of Blackburn), Chadwick (Oswaldtwistle), Watkins (Swansea), Jones (x3 Swansea), Colton (Shropshire), Knight (Shropshire/Montgomery) , Bullen (Norfolk), White (Dorset)

Thank you MaecW.

I wonder why an Irishman would join the Worcester Regiment and not a regiment in Ireland?

Then being  part of the UK it was not unusual for an Irish man to be in an English Regiment.

Findmypast  have records for Cpl. Patrick O’Niell service number 3388, in the 29th. Foot, born St. Luke's, Dublin 1827. He was discharged at Curragh Camp in 1863, intend place of residence Glasgow.

He served nearly 11 years in the East Indies and was awarded the India Mutiny Medal.

He originally attested for the 10th Regiment in Liverpool in January 1848 and transferred to the 29th Regiment in April 1852.

Generally army regiments did not have regional affiliations in those days. In January 1848 the bulk of both the 10th and 29th regiments were deployed in India, with depot companies based in Chatham.
