Where is Umbridge Castle

Hmmmm. On Page 386 there is a reference to Hugh being served heir to his father, and the source quoted is Shaw, iii, 404.

If Hugh was served heir to his father, there should be a detailed record in the National Records of Scotland which will provide details of Hugh and state that he is the nearest legitimate heir to his father. (I wonder why he was not served heir until 30 years after the death of his father?)

I happen to have a copy of Shaw's The History of the Province of Moray, 1775, and of the revised edition by J F S Gordon, 1882, which, unlike the first edition, runs to 3 volumes. Vol iii, Page 404, says that the 9th Protestant minister of Duffus and Unthank was Alex Anderson [son of the Rev Hugh A, of Udol, min of Cromarty], ord about 1700. Died in March 1721. [MD Aberdeen 10 Nov 1719]. No mention of Hugh Jr.

It might be worth a look in the Roll of Graduates of the University of Aberdeen.

Bathgate] to William M'Intosh [McIntosh] late of Daviot, now of M'Intosh [McIntosh], as representing the said deceased Lachlan M'Intosh of Torcastle, for £60, in full of the above claim; dated at Edinburgh, 7th January 1735.

From my 1882 Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland:

Bridgecastle, an estate, with a mansion, an ancient castle, a hamlet, and a colliery in Torphichen parish, Linlithgowshire. The mansion stands near the Blackstone and Boghead section of the Monkland railway, 2 1/2 miles NW of Bathgate, and has around it some fine old trees. The ancient castle stands in the south-western vicinity of the mansion; was formerly the seat of the Earls of Linlithgow; and as to its mere walls, remains in nearly its original condition. The hamlet lies about 1/2 mile SSW of the mansion.

"I note a sasine in the Register of Sasines for Ross and Cromarty in favour of Alexander Anderson of Udoll Esquire dated 5 Jun 1778, the content of which relates to land in Cromarty. It contains passing reference to the “deceast Alexr Gordon of Ardoch” and “Captain Adam Gordon his son” “to enter heir to his said father by a Decreet of Adjudication of the Lords of Council and Session of date [25 Nov 1767] obtained at the instance of William Baillie of Rosehall and George Munro of Culcairn” regarding payment and satisfaction to them of two accumulated sums amounting together to 2,334 pounds Scots. It would appear, therefore, that his later days were dogged by debts."
