help with finding hotel and pub in Blyth in 1901
« on: Tuesday 13 February 18 12:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi My 3xgreat aunt Barbara Mabon born 1862 Ancroft, Northumberland Married to Thomas Matthewson who was born 1870 in Lowick.

On the 1901 census They were living in Norths Street, Newsham, Blyth and were manageress of a hotel/pub. I wondered if anyone knew whether this was where the pub might of been and what the pub was called.

On this same census there is an Alexander Matthewson that is an Inn Keeper at the Odd Fellows Arms which seems to be in the same area on North Street.

Any help would be much appreciated

Susan

If you look at that census you will see that Mathew Thomas is Employer - Working 'At Home'
Census information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

This is the right sort of area according to the enumerator's route on page one of the 1901 census, but I can't see Northd Street (yet):

Added:
I think the street is Northumberland Street, not Norths or North Street.
You can see a PH (Public House) marked here:

There is another PH just above the intersection with Wellington St East, though it is not clear if this is on Northumberland Street.

Just a snippet from the British Newspapers on FMPast:

Changes Amongst Blyth Innkeepers
....Mr. T. English, who for a considerable time has been host of the King's Head Hotel, Blyth, has gone to a house in North Shields. His place is filled by Mr. Matthewson, of the Ridley Arms. Blyth, who, in turn, is succeeded by Mr. Weatherley, the ....

If you look at these people on the 1881:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q2WM-7CLR

the address is 21 Northumberland and it says Ridley Arms.

After reading what MaureeninNY found

I think this photo may well be the same pub.

Thank you all very much for your help. You have helped solve another mystery. In 1901 Thomas and Barbara had a daughter who must have been born after the 1901 census. She died in 1906. Her name was May Ridley Matthewson. I wondered where the name Ridley had come from so this explains where the Ridley came from  :)

I bet she was grateful that the pub wasn't the King's Head :-)
