Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

Also, it is not clear on the NRI site for any particular parish whether the parish records haven't survived or whether the parish wasn't established until a later date.

If you go to page for a particular parish there should be link at bottom for other records (click on Irish Ancestors link). This won't tell you when parish was established but will show earlier records than on NLI site and where thy can be found.

Thank you for that, it may come in useful for other Irish ancestors too.

Have you looked for Death of Father??

In Cloughleigh townland.... might narrow down Parish!!

Just an example, might be father, might not....

Service No. 9686

Married 22/10/1854

Wife Native of Londonderry

Yes, wife was Bessie McCloskey, and naughty boy John married her on 8 March 1851 and first child baptised 8 Feb 1852 in Magherafelt.  I think 1854 date is an "official" date, 7 years after he had joined up.

There was also a Philp Honan in the RIC born Tipperary.

Was John's wife from Londonderry,

There is also an Edmund on that page.

I had spotted Philip, and I wondered if he was a brother or cousin.  Edmund is HOGAN!

Yes, I spotted that death while I was looking for clues earlier.  I hadn't worked out the townland though, so thanks for that.  Only problem is there are other James HONAN deaths at about the same time and age and occupation, though not in Tipperary and without more info, I can't be sure which one (if any) is mine.

Opps, similar mistake could be made by transcribers of parish records so check all possibilitys

It was FamilySearch btw not Find My Past.

Ooops , sorry Sinann.

Noted about the possible mistranscription - Honan is not a good name; I've also seen Homan, Henan, and John's own marriage is mistranscribed as Horan.

Just looking at the IGP record again, it says Tipperary S which I think stands for Tipperary South Riding
in Griffith's Valuation there are 9 Honan in South Riding.
2 in Bohercrow just outside Tipperary town.
3 in the Civil Parish of Templenoe so also in the RC parish of Tipperary
3 in the Civil Parish of Templeniery which would be in the RC parish of Bansha and Kilmoyler
1 in the Civil Parish of Caher which is in the RC parish of Cahir.
