Probate Record Copies
« on: Wednesday 14 February 18 12:51 GMT (UK) »
Hello--
How do you obtain copies of probate records for people who died in late 1800s and 1900s??
I have found them in the Ancestry Probate Index. Thanks.

Hi

Try this site

https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk

If there is a will it can be downloaded for £10, it takes about 5 days.

Make sure though that it isn't just a grant of probate as that won't tell you anything

Types of grant
Not all grants of representation contain a will. Check the type of grant when you search:

‘Probate’ or ‘Grant and Will’ - a will exists and will be provided
‘Admon with Will’ or ‘Grant and Will’ - a will exists and will be provided
Administration (Admon) or Grant’ - a will doesn’t exist and won’t be provided

Hi--
I ordered a record the other day--it did mention a will.
What if it says "Administration"---any info. at all??

From what I understand if it just says " Administration (Admon) or Grant’ - a will doesn’t exist and won’t be provided." All it will say is who has been granted the right to distribute the estate, which I think it says on the probate record anyway. If it says "Administration with will" then a will does exist.
