Help with a Change in Surname (Went/Whent)
« on: Wednesday 14 February 18 15:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi there,

I wonder if you can help me,

I have been looking at my tree and have gone a fair way back but I have found a name change (well an extra letter added) I am therefore not sure I have gone off track, although other trees I have seen are the same.

What I have is, going back on the male side;

Robert Whent (1701 - ?)
Robert Whent (1735 - 1800)
Robert Whent (1756 - 1800)
Joseph Went (1788 - 1851)
Joseph Went (1824 - 1884)
Josiah Went (1858 - 1942)
Herbert Went (1877 - 1944)
William Went (1919 - 1988) - My Grandfather

Is this normal to have a change.

Any help would be great.

many thanks,

James

It is not unusual to have surnames either adding or dropping a letter or two.  If you are confident of the connection between Robert 1756 and Joseph 1788, then I wouldn't worry too much.

Where is the family from?  If you wanted any double checking done, Rootschatters are always willing to help.

Well let's start with this:-

Marriage for Joseph Went to Mary Eagle at Bradfield, Essex in 1812.  Is this what you have for your 1788 Joseph?

Where did you find Joseph's death?  Not coming up with one for 1851.
