I wonder if it would be worth seeing if the local newspaper would be prepared to show this photograph and ask any readers if they recognize either the people and/or the possible event.
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Well blow me down... that is what my (totally un Family history orientated ---) Other Half  mentioned.. and it sure does look like it..

ok..

It was said that Robert the elder was a Wesleyan Chapel man and kept himself to the Front room on Sundays .. not allowing anyone to interfere with his quiet time..   ! 

 He was in the Boer War with his brother Albert.   So maybe he had a lot to ponder.
