Mary Eaton [or Katon] and Margaret Plummer
« on: Wednesday 14 February 18 21:01 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Is anyone able to check for the following christenings:

Mary Eaton [or possibly Katon] in Godmersham or the nearby area between 1600 and 1630.

Margaret Plummer - in Ashford or the nearby area c1662

Mary Eaton married Daniel Chapman in Godmersham in 1643 and some transcripts have her name as Eaton and some as Katon. The original on the PR looks more like Eaton (or Eton) as the "E" resembles the "E" used in "Elizabeth" on the page.

Margaret Plummer married Richard Chapman in Lenham in 1685 (by licence). Both Richard and Margaret are described as being "of Ashford" and her age is given as 22 which would make her born in about 1662. However I haven't found any sign of a Margaret Plummer in Ashford or anywhere in 1662. The only Margaret I've so far found was christened in Canterbury in about 1659.

Thanks for any suggestions

Matt

I found that christening as well, and I think it is the only one I've seen. I agree that at 13 it would make her a little young to be married in 1643.

I'll keep an eye on her though, just in case.

Thanks

Hi

What about this one in Godmersham, it may have been how the minister heard it ( surname)

Mary Edden baptised 23 March 1616 daughter of Robert.

It may be that Mary Eaton was not baptised soon after her birth.

Hi Claire

"Eaton", "Eton", "Etton", "Endon"?

It could be her possibly. I can see how the name could be misheard.

I'll check for any other "Eddon" children and see if there's any burials too.

Hi Claire

Just checked this one on FindMyPast. It's the only record for a Mary that comes up between 1610 and 1625, using all variations of the surname.

It also appears to be the only "Edden" christening in Godmersham at that time,  and the only one where the father is named as Robert.

I didn't find any burials for Mary or Robert. However I think I found Robert's marriage. This appears to have happened in May 1616 in Chilham. It is the only one I've found.

Anyhow I'm gonna leave the Edden/Eaton lot there for now. I've still got to sort out the Roberts, Chapman, Land, and Dourne/Dworn trees. Not to mention the Ovendens and Moons in Sussex lol!
